Black Dog Syndrome: Why do people discriminate against dark pets?

Interesting article. I adopted a black cat a few months ago and it can be really hard to see his face/features in low light (and in photographs). Had he not been a vocal and active kitten when I went to the SPCA, I may have overlooked him. But having him around has been awesome. (See some pictures of him here.)
