How does one become a writer?

Where to begin…

Last night it was suggested by some extended family members who stopped by the house that I should be a writer (before I go further let me briefly acknowledge how wonderful it was to see them and catch up, as they may be reading this). I confess I’ve thought about writing before. Most of my jobs have involved writing on some level, usually marketing copy in one form or another, and I like to tool around with short stories, ideas for novels/screenplays, etc. but I’ve never committed to anything of real substance.

Now, I’ll wager I’ve fired off more letters to editor than the average person, and I’ve no shortage of opinions on issues ranging from the deeply profound to the intricate inanities of mobile phone etiquette. The blog has been a good outlet for me to talk about some of these issues and probably good practice for writing on a consistent basis, since I imagine one becomes a better writer by writing more and becoming more disciplined with their habits.

But how to go about submitting work, seeking out freelance opportunities, etc? Because I’d definitely be interested in pursuing this if someone could help point the way…
