Donald Trump at the Republican debate earlier this week:
“I feel that the gun-free zones and, you know, when you say that, that’s target practice for the sickos and for the mentally ill,” he told CNBC moderators. “They look around for gun-free zones.”
Here’s a good recap of his idiotic blather from the Atlantic. This isn’t about being politically correct- this about spreading misinformation that muddies the waters when it comes time to legislate these issues. It’s about the destructive potential on people’s lives when you create a narrative that paints them as dangerous. It can impact how we view issues like treatment, hospitalization and patient rights. The people who like Trump like him because he’s outspoken and brash, which sure, to each their own when it comes to style, but for the people who think he’s telling some kind of truth are deluding themselves. To appropriate a phrase from Christopher Hitchens, he’s so full of shit that if you gave him an enema you could fit him in a matchbox.
Call me a cynic, but the GOP candidates will be debating again on November 10th. I don’t expect anything less than the same old lies lines about mental health and gun violence.
But I’d love to be surprised…
You are so right!
